My DIL Disobeyed My House Rules — I Made Her Regret It

Everybody has to bring a homemade dish to my annual family dinner. My DIL, who was attending for the first time, brought a store-bought dish, stating, “My time is valuable; I’m not a SAHM like you!” I said nothing.

Since this isn’t homemade, I thought you wouldn’t mind using paper plates, so I set disposable plates next to her dish at dinner.

I hoped this would be helpful because I know you’re busy. “It’s not about having time—it’s about making time and showing respect for this family,” I said as she started to cry and tried to explain.

My son then accused me of being disrespectful to his wife and insisted that I issue a public apology. I declined. I haven’t heard back from them in a week. Was I overreacting?
