In a heartfelt conversation, Justin Bieber’s mom Pattie Mallette shared the difficult trials she endured as a teen, from abuse survival to her choice to have her baby despite strong pressure to do otherwise.

Before motherhood, Mallette suffered sexual abuse for years, a topic she speaks about openly in her book “Nowhere But Up: The Story of Justin Bieber’s Mom.” She explained how this abuse created feelings of disgrace and self-fault.

“Many survivors feel this way,” Mallette said. “You hold this disgrace and believe something is wrong with you. I certainly felt that weight.”

Her pain led to a suicide try during her teen years. Looking back on this hard time, Mallette said, “Years of abuse, plus sadness and drug use caused it. Drugs and alcohol only hurt me more. I reached my limit.”

At age 17, Mallette became pregnant with Justin. She faced heavy pressure to end her pregnancy, but stayed firm in her choice to keep her baby.

“I knew I couldn’t do it,” Mallette told Gifford. “I had no idea how I would cope, but I was set on trying my best. I had to give him a chance.”

This resolve helped her through big struggles as a young, single mom. When Justin was born, Mallette says his first cry was special.

“It may seem odd, but his cry was like music,” she said with joy. “It went ‘A hah, a hah,’ and I thought, ‘This is the most dear sound ever.’ I just wanted to hold him always.”

Mallette’s path from a hard past to raising a world-famous pop star shows strength, belief, and total love. Her choice to have her child, despite all odds, changed her life path and led to Justin’s rise to fame.
