Wedding Was Canceled After Taking It

I always believed my wedding day would be memorable for all the right reasons. Instead, it became unforgettable for a reason I never expected. It all started when my sister brought a lie detector to the wedding.

I’m Harlene, a 28-year-old teacher, and until recently, I thought I had a perfect life. My fiancé, Mark, and I had been together for five wonderful years, planning a future full of love and happiness. That future disappeared the moment my sister, Melissa, turned my wedding into a nightmare.

Let me explain.

Mark and I met through a mutual friend five years ago, and from the first moment, it felt like we’d known each other forever. He was very kind and considerate of everyone around him. What I loved most about him was how he treated everyone equally and always helped others.

It didn’t take long before we became inseparable. We spent weekends trying new restaurants, binge-watching sitcoms, and dreaming about what was to come.

“Har,” he’d tease with a grin, “if you weren’t such a good cook, I’d probably starve.”

“Good thing I love feeding you,” I would reply, laughing as he finished another plate of lasagna.

Mark worked as a software engineer, sometimes staying at his desk late into the night. I never minded. I understood how dedicated he was and appreciated his hard work.

As for me, I was living my dream as a teacher. My students brought joy to my days, and I loved every lively, chaotic moment of the job.

When we decided to marry, we agreed that our wedding should be a joyful celebration. We wanted everyone to feel happy for us.

“Let’s make it a wedding people will talk about for years,” Mark said one evening during our planning.

“Absolutely,” I agreed. “How about some games? Fun ones that get everyone involved?”

“Great idea,” he said excitedly. “Maybe trivia, charades, or even a karaoke contest.”

We even asked my sister Melissa for suggestions. At first, she didn’t seem very interested.

“I don’t know,” she said with a shrug. “You two are the creative ones. Just tell me what to do, and I’ll help.”

With her lackluster input, Mark and I kept planning the perfect wedding. Every detail mattered, from the music playlist to where guests would sit.

Mark paid close attention to each detail, from matching napkins to the wedding cake.

“This will be the best day of our lives,” I said, finalizing the guest list.

“It will,” he replied, squeezing my hand. “I can’t wait to see you walk down the aisle.”

I believed in us. We were the perfect team. Nothing could go wrong.

But I had no idea that the wedding I loved would turn into a moment I’d want to forget.

The wedding day finally arrived, and I was full of excitement. Standing in front of the mirror, I couldn’t stop smiling. This was the day I’d long dreamed of.

When I entered the venue, a buzz of energy filled the air. Everyone was having fun, laughing, talking, and enjoying the atmosphere we had carefully created.

Mark greeted me with a kiss on the cheek.

“You look beautiful, Har,” he said with admiration.

“And you look handsome,” I replied, smiling at his sharp suit and sparkling eyes.

Everything was perfect until Melissa grabbed the microphone.

“Alright, everyone!” she announced loudly. “I have a surprise for the happy couple! I’ve been planning it for weeks, and I promise it’ll be fun!”

I looked at her in shock. I had no idea she had planned a surprise game.

“Melissa, what’s this about?” I asked, walking over.

“You’ll see!” she said with a mischievous grin. She signaled to a man in the corner, who rolled in a small machine with wires and sensors.

“What is that?” I asked, curious.

“It’s a lie detector!” Melissa said excitedly. “I saw this online and thought it would be a hilarious wedding game. You and Mark will answer some fun questions while connected to it. Everyone will love it.”

I exchanged looks with Mark, who gave a skeptical shrug.

“Why not?” he said. “Let’s entertain everyone.”

Melissa clapped happily. “Great! Let’s begin.”

The technician connected us to the device, and Melissa started with easy questions.

“Mark,” she grinned, “have you ever taken the last slice of pizza and blamed it on Harlene?”

He chuckled. “Yes,” he admitted, making everyone laugh.

Then it was my turn.

“Har,” Melissa asked, “have you ever secretly watched a show without Mark?”

“Guilty,” I said, smiling as the machine beeped to show I was telling the truth.

Questions kept coming, each sillier than the last. Guests took turns, with questions like, “Have you lied about liking your partner’s cooking?” or “Did you crush on a celebrity while dating each other?”

Everyone was laughing, and I thought this would be a highlight of the day.

Suddenly, Uncle Sam stood up. His usual cheerful face turned serious as he approached the microphone.

“Now it’s my turn,” he said solemnly. “Mark, did you ever cheat on my niece?”

What? I thought. Where did that come from?

I looked at Mark, silent, while murmurs spread through the crowd.

He nervously laughed and said, “That’s an absurd question, Uncle Sam. I don’t need to answer.”

But Uncle Sam was not smiling.

“I think you should answer, Mark,” he said firmly. “If you have nothing to hide, what’s the problem?”

My heart pounded. I reached out to Mark.

“Mark,” I whispered, “it’s just a game. Let’s keep the mood light, okay?”

He looked at me with a tense jaw. “Exactly. It’s just a game, and that question is out of line.”

His expression gave me pause. There was no humor, only defensiveness.

I tried to stay calm. This was Mark, my Mark. The man I loved. He couldn’t have cheated.

But Uncle Sam did not back down.

“Then answer, if it’s so silly. Or prove you’re telling the truth.”

Mark clenched his fists, face tense. “It’s insulting. I don’t owe anyone an answer to such nonsense.”

I saw the guests whispering, exchanging looks. My pulse raced. Why was Mark reacting like this?

“Mark,” I said softly, “please answer so we can move past this.”

He shook his head. “No, Harlene. I won’t dignify that with an answer.”

His words told me something was wrong.

“Mark,” I said, trembling, “if you don’t answer, I don’t think I can go through with this wedding. I need to know if there’s anything to hide.”

He looked around, then sighed.

“Fine,” he said bitterly, glaring at Uncle Sam. “No, I have not cheated on you.”

Uncle Sam looked at the technician.

“He’s lying, isn’t he?” he asked.

The technician quickly checked the results and nodded.

It looked like a lie.

The crowd gasped loudly.

What? I whispered. How can that be?

Uncle Sam smiled.

“Has Mark cheated on anyone here?” he asked.

Mark looked cornered.

“No,” he said plainly.

Another beep confirmed he was lying.

I couldn’t believe it.

“Who was it, Mark?” I asked. “Who did you cheat on me with?”

He didn’t answer.

That’s when I saw Melissa shifting nervously. A terrible thought entered my mind.

“Was it her?” I asked, pointing at Melissa. “Did you cheat on me with my sister?”

Mark froze. He looked at Melissa before turning his gaze back to me.

“Tell me, Mark,” I pressed, “was it her? Melissa?”

He looked down and said what I didn’t want to hear.

“Yes,” he admitted.

The lie detector didn’t need to confirm it. The machine already had.

The silence was deafening. I took a shaky breath, staring at Mark, then at Melissa who looked ready to disappear.

Before I could ask anything else, Uncle Sam cleared his throat.

“I wasn’t planning to say anything today,” he started, fixing his eyes on Mark. “But I saw you two together a few weeks ago. I was at the mall and saw you, Mark, holding Melissa’s hand. I thought I was imagining it until I noticed how you leaned into her, touched her cheek.”

He paused, shaking his head.

“It’s not how a future brother-in-law should act with his fiancée’s sister,” he stated coldly. “I hoped I was wrong, but I sensed I wasn’t. Today, when Melissa acted nervous and twitchy, I decided to find out the truth.”

His words cut deep. I looked at Melissa, tears streaking her face.

“Why?” I whispered. “Why, Melissa? You’re my sister. How could you?”

She started to speak, but her voice cracked, and she couldn’t finish.

Then I turned to Mark.

“You didn’t just betray me. You destroyed everything we had,” I said. “How could you do this? Why?”

Mark avoided my gaze.

“I made a mistake,” he muttered, as if that erased everything.

My chest hurt and tears blurred my vision. I knew cheating wasn’t just a mistake. It was a choice I could never accept.

Without another word, I tore off the wires from the lie detector and ran out, leaving behind the man I thought I knew, the sister I trusted, and the wedding that would never happen.

Some betrayals cut too deep to heal, and this was one I couldn’t ignore.
