A coal extraction worker’s daughter forbids him from joining her graduation celebration because she believes he appears “filthy.” He attends anyway and speaks to her using a microphone, sharing information that causes her to weep and feel remorse for her previous statements.
“Fine, I’ll phone you back…my father just arrived,” 18-year-old Sabrina ended her call with her friend immediately after hearing her dad Pete, who works in coal extraction, park his vehicle in the garage. She continued flipping through television stations, attempting to avoid Pete’s notice. She hoped he wouldn’t inquire about her upcoming graduation ceremony scheduled for two days later.
Sabrina didn’t want Pete present because she felt embarrassed by his looks. She worried her father would draw unwanted attention for appearing ‘unclean’ and having the scent of coal and perspiration…”Hi, darling! See what I’ve brought you,” Pete said as he walked in, sounding cheerful.
Sabrina felt surprised but restrained herself. She enjoyed surprises generally, but disliked seeing her father’s darkened face and hands. She never let him contact any of her belongings to prevent them from becoming soiled.
Pete comprehended Sabrina’s feelings completely. He had been doing this for many years, since she lost her mother. Therefore, he provided Sabrina with personal space and honored her limits, instead placing two packages on the table, saying, “Darling, I hope these please you!”
After confirming her father had left the area, Sabrina quickly tore open the box to find a stunning dress inside. She adored it and began to blush. Then she opened the second box and discovered an expensive suit within.
“Thank you for the dress, dad. But who will wear this suit?”
“It’s for myself, sweetheart! I must look impressive…it’s your graduation, after all!”
Never feel shame toward those who dedicated their lives to you. Sabrina pressed her lips together in annoyance. She tossed the box aside and stated firmly: “Dad, I don’t want you to attend. All my friends and their parents will be there. I don’t want them mocking me after seeing you, okay??” A heavy silence filled the space as Pete exited the bathroom, drying his face. He appeared shocked, and Sabrina’s words struck him powerfully.
“What did you just say?”
“Dad, my friends’ fathers come from respected backgrounds. They are wealthy and resemble celebrities. I don’t want you standing among them like a…like a mess…dad, please understand. No matter how nicely you dress, anyone can easily identify you as a coal miner by observing your dirty face and hands. I don’t want them laughing at me. Please skip my graduation.” Pete felt deeply wounded because he had been eagerly anticipating the event.
“But thanks for the dress. I love it!” Sabrina walked to her bedroom and closed the door loudly to try on the dress, leaving Pete dealing with more than just emotional pain.
Pete believed Sabrina was too immature to comprehend his affection for her. “She remains a child!” he soothed his wounded spirit and resolved to still attend the graduation celebration with a heartbreaking surprise he had already arranged for her. Two days afterward, on graduation day…
“Honey, can I at least transport you to your school?” Pete questioned Sabrina. She appeared so beautiful, and he felt immensely proud she was finally graduating.
“Transport me?? Not necessary, dad. My companion Dave is arriving to collect me in his automobile. I don’t want to ruin my outfit traveling in your grimy vehicle.”
“Very well! Enjoy your special day, darling!” “And dad, please stay away, okay?? I believe you won’t come. Goodbye…see you later!”
Pete waited for Sabrina’s departure so he could quickly prepare himself and join the ceremony.
“How could I miss this crucial moment in my daughter’s existence? I must be present!”
Shortly after, Pete reached the location and positioned himself in the parent seating section. He applauded as students received their awards. He was eager to witness Sabrina receive hers. “Next, we invite Miss Sabrina Parker!” the announcer declared.
Pete hurried to the front with his mobile phone and began recording as Sabrina obtained her diploma. He felt elated, but Sabrina appeared shocked upon noticing her father.
“Congratulations, sweetheart!” Pete continued shouting from beneath the platform. “I feel so proud of you!”
However, Sabrina neither smiled nor responded. Instead, she grimaced and returned to her friends. She was impatient for the ceremony to conclude so she could express anger at her dad for attending.
Suddenly, she heard the announcer state, “Mr. Parker, could we have you join us on stage.”
Sabrina was astonished and couldn’t comprehend what was happening as she observed Pete approach the podium.
“Why is he summoning my dad to the stage? Oh no…what’s occurring?”
Pete joyfully walked to the stage and grasped the microphone.
“Thank you, Mr. Lauren! Good evening, everyone!” Pete started. “Can we display the slideshow, please?!”
The audience and Sabrina were amazed when the hall darkened, and the projector activated. Pete had created a lovely video featuring images of himself and Sabrina from her childhood until just before graduation. The day preceding the graduation ceremony, he had met with the principal and staff, explaining his intention to surprise his daughter. He was therefore granted special permission to create a surprise for Sabrina immediately after she received her diploma.
“I love my daughter. Sabrina, I feel extremely proud of you. I believe your mother would feel equally proud if she were present today. Emma, if you are somehow here, you can see for yourself! You told me I couldn’t raise my daughter alone, but no other father on earth could feel as proud as I do now. Congratulations, Sabrina…we accomplished this together!”
Sabrina dissolved into tears after viewing the video. She sprinted to her dad as everyone stood and applauded him. She embraced him and sobbed, “Thank you very much, dad! I apologize.”
Pete dried her tears and savored the remainder of the evening. While traveling home, Sabrina remembered Pete mentioning her deceased mother. His remarks troubled her.
“Dad, why did you mention mom would be proud if she attended the graduation party? She passed away long ago, and how could she attend if she is dead?”
Pete glanced at Sabrina and chuckled. “Your mother is not deceased, sweetheart. She lives and resides in this very town!”
Sabrina was stunned because she had been told her mother had died. This was untrue, and Pete never wanted his daughter to learn the facts about her mother until she reached maturity.
“WHAT? MOM IS ALIVE? Dad, why did you hide this from me?”
Pete understood it was time to make the most significant admission of his life. “Because your mom never wanted you. She informed me that your biological father had died. She told me I needed to decide whether to raise you or place you in a shelter.”
It was revealed that Pete and his wife Emma had separated when Sabrina was young. Before moving forward, Emma disclosed to Pete their daughter was not his biological child. Pete was devastated but decided to raise the girl as his own.
“I could not view you as someone else’s child. You were my entire world, and you remain my everything today,” Pete wept.
Upon hearing this, Sabrina flung herself into Pete’s arms and cried against his shoulder. “You are not my biological father??”
Pete returned her embrace. “Darling, I may not be your birth father, but my love for you is undiminished. Forget what I just revealed. You will always be MY DAUGHTER regardless of anything and everything.”
“I apologize, dad. I feel embarrassed for causing you pain. I labeled you ‘dirty’ and ‘smelly’ without understanding your sacrifices for me. What would have become of me if you had not stepped forward and brought me up? Please forgive me.”
Pete wiped away Sabrina’s tears, and they drove home, where he welcomed all his friends and neighbors to celebrate his daughter’s graduation.
Pete and Sabrina never discussed their past again. Remarkably, Sabrina no longer felt embarrassed by her dad. She felt proud of him and recognized he was not a source of shame but an exceptional man who raised her with affection and attention when her mother deserted her.
What lessons can we draw from this narrative?
Never feel shame about individuals who committed their lives to you. Sabrina constantly felt embarrassed by her dad Pete and considered him unclean and odorous because of his employment in the coal mine. She remained unaware of his sacrifices in bringing her up until he joined her graduation ceremony.
Avoid using harsh words against your parents, who instructed you how to talk. While Pete felt enthusiastic about joining his daughter’s graduation celebration, Sabrina firmly requested him not to come. She believed people would mock his appearance and cast her in a negative light.
