A caring dog refuses to leave her mother’s side, lying on her hospital bed while medical staff work hard to save her life.

When a 17-year-old girl brought home a service puppy, she did not expect the dog might one day save her life.

Initially, Shauna Darcy thought Ruby’s purpose was to help manage her anxiety, depression, and intense fear of leaving her house—known as agoraphobia.

Over time, Shauna observed that Ruby’s presence had a calming effect on her. She was able to complete school with Ruby’s support. However, after graduating, her anxiety returned, making it impossible for her to leave her home again.

Because of her anxiety, Shauna missed holidays, birthdays, and avoided visiting family in Melbourne. She lacked the courage to step outside her house.

Ruby’s companionship provided Shauna some comfort, encouraging her to try basic training with her pet.

Shauna was unsure if she qualified for an assistance dog, but after her dog’s behavior was tested and approved, she began training Ruby.

Years later, Shauna, now in her twenties, saw Ruby as more than a pet. She considered her a “lifeline.”

The doctors fought intensely to stabilize her health, while Ruby stayed steadfastly by her side.

Trained to be an alert dog, Ruby usually warned her owner 5 to 10 minutes before any change in her heartbeat or blood pressure.

Shauna understood Ruby’s signals—like pawing or getting on top of her if she ignored the alerts.

Eventually, Ruby proved she was more than just a service dog. When she sensed something was wrong, Shauna visited her doctor.

She found she had a rare condition called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), caused by Vascular Ehlers–Danlos syndrome. Her health issues caused her chronic pain and exhaustion.

Ruby had detected symptoms before Shauna realized there was a problem. The dog then helped monitor her heart rate and blood pressure.

She assisted during panic attacks, retrieved emergency medicines, carried groceries, picked up dropped items, and helped her reach objects she couldn’t get on her own.

Ruby was trained in deep pressure therapy. When Shauna fainted, Ruby pressed against her and licked her hands and face until she woke up.

One day, Ruby alerted Shauna about an emergency she didn’t notice herself. Shauna was feeling fine but trusted her dog and called an ambulance.

When paramedics arrived, Shauna was in severe pain and losing consciousness. She was rushed to the hospital. Doctors discovered her heart was beating irregularly—a condition called atrial fibrillation.

Shauna realized Ruby had saved her life that day. The medical team worked hard to stabilize her, and Ruby refused to leave her side during treatment. Even unconscious, she stayed pressed against her.

Many visitors came to meet Ruby during Shauna’s stay. Shauna told The Feed:

“I can’t imagine what life would be like without Ruby. She’s with me during tough times and never judges me when I’m unwell.”

Ruby gained widespread admiration for her dedication and love. People praised her for saving her owner and admired her loyalty.

Today, Shauna and Ruby are well-known wherever they go. Ruby monitors Shauna’s health daily, and Shauna feels very grateful for her dog.

“I wouldn’t be alive without her,” Shauna said.
