Addison Barnes, a high school student, received a $25,000 settlement after being sent home for wearing a “Donald J.
Trump Border Wall Construction Co.” shirt, referencing Trump’s border wall efforts.
The school asked Barnes to cover or change the shirt, and when he refused, he was suspended for the day. Barnes sued, claiming his First Amendment rights were violated.
The school settled, covering his legal fees and requiring the principal to apologize.
The district argued the shirt could cause disruption, given the large Hispanic student population.
Barnes believes the settlement reinforces free speech rights in schools.
